My father has big trouble to receive gifts from others, even from me. Last time I sent some money to him, what he said is, I will put the money in the bank and save it for you. I understand his good meanings, but still that hurts a little bit my feeling. Now why receiving gift is so hard for someone?
One night, we had a chance to talk this in deeper. One of the major reasons is that he does not trust the "gift." My father had a very hard time especially in his young age--his father left him when he was 6, and no one took care of him after that. Even worse, people took advantage of him by "trapping" him. A lot of times, if someone suddently show favor to him, that actually means more trouble behind. So he don't take any gift from anyone since there is no "free" gift.
Another reason is his pride. For many people, "receiving" is much harder than "giving" because they just don't want to have the feeling of owning to someone. They would rather stay independent and want to be left alone. Are human being can really be left alone? It is easy to try, stop breathing for one minute of two, I am sure you will realize how much you rely on air, which is created by God.
I felt after I know God deeper -- first my inner self-rejection being healed by His love, and then realized how limited I am, I found it became much easier to receive from someone. Later I will share how my father is changed.
